Car Cost per Km Calculator

Calculate your real cost per kilometer: fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation — with monthly and annual totals.

Planning estimateThe result is a planning estimate only. It does not replace professional advice or a personal review.

What does a kilometer of driving really cost?

Most drivers only think about fuel, but fuel is usually less than half the true cost. The calculator combines two cost types:

Variable costs (per km)

Fuel: price per liter × consumption per 100 km ÷ 100.

Fixed costs (annual)

Insurance, maintenance (service, tires, repairs) and depreciation — the largest and most overlooked cost: the difference between your car's value today and a year from now. Fixed costs are divided by your annual mileage.

Use the result to compare against public transport, mileage reimbursement, or a second-car decision.

💡 Useful Tips

  • Typical depreciation: 10%–15% of the car’s value per year (higher for new cars).
  • The more you drive, the lower the per-km cost — fixed costs spread over more kilometers.
  • Add annual parking and tolls to fixed costs if relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does depreciation count as a cost?

Because it is real money lost: the gap between purchase and resale price, spread over the years of ownership. It is usually a car’s single largest cost.

Does this work for EVs?

Yes — replace fuel price with electricity cost using the consumption field (e.g. 15 kWh/100 km × price per kWh).

What is a typical cost per km?

For a typical family car: roughly $0.30–$0.60 per km all-in, depending on mileage and car value.
